Congo: A state of emergency has been declared due to the threat of monkeypox outbreak in Africa.
The African Union has declared the outbreak of monkeypox across the continent a public health emergency.
“It is with a heavy heart that we are declaring monkeypox as a public health emergency of continental security,” said Jean Cassia, head of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The virus has killed more than 511 people and recorded more than 14,000 cases since the start of the year in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
It should be noted that World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus last week declared monkeypox to be a “severe epidemic”.
