Melbourne: Doctors have recently identified a gene that experts may soon be able to predict whether your flu infection will be fatal or whether you’ll recover quickly.
Scientists have identified a gene linked to the influenza virus that, if tested quickly, could tell early whether hospitalized patients with respiratory viral infections have mild illness or face life-threatening complications. Will have to.
According to new research published in Cell, the level of expression of a gene called OLAH is important in determining the severity of the disease.
“Our first observation of the gene was in a patient with influenza AH7N9 who was admitted to hospital,” says Brendan Doherty, a doctor at the University of Melbourne and a viral and translational immunologist at the Institute for Infection and Immunity.
Also occurred during analysis of hospitalized patients.
In this patient we discovered a consistent association between high expression levels of OLAH and fatal outcome.
