San Francisco: A recent study has revealed that young people who spend too much time on social media are facing severe mental difficulties in performing essential daily routines.

According to a study published in the journal PLOS Mental Health, among young people diagnosed with Internet addiction, signals were disrupted between brain regions responsible for controlling attention and memory.

The aforementioned study analyzed 12 neuroimaging studies conducted on hundreds of adolescents between 2013 and 2022. The age of these participants was 10 to 19 years.

Researchers have said that behavioral disorders caused by excessive Internet use have increased alarmingly over the past decade. Max Chang, the study’s author and manager of a nonprofit family service provider in San Francisco, said that the clinical diagnosis of Internet addiction in the studies was based on 3 things. 1) being constantly and constantly engaged on the Internet, 2) symptoms of being kept away from the Internet and #3) sacrificing time for relationships due to spending time on the Internet for long periods of time.

Max said that such behaviors result in significant impairment and distress in the individual’s life.
