A small rocky stretch of coast in North Africa called Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera holds the distinction of being the world’s smallest border.
This rocky outcrop is located on the coast of Morocco, which was conquered by Spain in 1564. The total length of this border is only 85 meters.
Spain shares about 2,000 km of land borders with Portugal and France, but also has smaller borders with countries such as Andorra, Gibraltar and Morocco, one of which is with Morocco.
Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera has been owned by Spain since 1564. Although Morocco has repeatedly claimed ownership of it, Spain has never agreed to return the land. Even to protect it, Spain has deployed soldiers in it.
