New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has protested across the country against the controversial citizenship law, which was implemented before the date of general elections was announced.

According to a report by Reuters, officials said that protests broke out in the eastern Indian state of Assam and the southern state of Tamil Nadu following the implementation of the law on Monday, but there were no reports of clashes with security forces or any casualties.

Protesters staged a candlelight march and chanted slogans against the controversial citizenship law in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state.

Meanwhile, protesters in Assam burned copies of the law and shouted slogans during late-night protests, and local opposition parties have called for a statewide strike.

Opponents of the CAA in Assam fear it could lead to mass migration from neighboring Bangladesh, where a border dispute has been raging for decades.

Kerala’s ruling Communist Party (Marxist) has also announced a statewide protest against the law.

In a statement on social media website X, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the state of Kerala will stand united against this communal and divisive law.

In India’s capital, New Delhi, authorities have been alerted to prevent any kind of tension, illegal gatherings and heavy police presence in sensitive areas since the bloody protests in Delhi in 2019.

It should be noted that Modi’s nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government enacted the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on Monday, which aims to grant citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants from Muslim-majority South Asian countries. Ease of acquisition.

In 2019, there were worst protests and religious riots against the said law, which resulted in the killing of dozens of Muslims and hence the implementation of the law was delayed.
