Tehran: An Iranian court has sentenced a pop singer to three years in prison, whose songs became part of protests following the death of young Kurdish girl Mehsa Amini.

26-year-old singer Sherwin Hajipour wrote and released the song ‘Brai’ in September 2022 during nationwide protests following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini. He said on his Instagram page that he had been sentenced to three years in prison for “endangering national security, inciting people to riot”.

He added that he was also sentenced to 8 months for “propaganda against the government”. US First Lady Jill Biden is believed to have awarded the singer a special Grammy for Best Song for Social Change, calling the song’s lyrics “a powerful and poetic call for freedom and women’s rights”.

It should be noted that 10 months ago, the moral police disappeared from the streets of Iran following violent protests across the country following the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mehsa Amini, who was arrested for allegedly violating dress codes.
