New Delhi: India Enacts ‘Anti-Muslim’ Citizenship Law

According to the foreign news agency ‘AFP’, the Ministry of Home Affairs of India is implementing the citizenship law. Critics of the law say the controversial citizenship law, based on discriminatory treatment of Muslims, is being implemented at a time when general elections in the world’s most populous country are weeks away.

It should be noted that this law was passed in December 2019, the implementation of the law was stopped due to protests and violent demonstrations, with reports of more than 100 people killed in various incidents.

It should be noted that this law grants Indian citizenship to Hindus, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Christians who entered India from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh before December 2014, but there will be no such provision for Muslims.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, while implementing the law, said that eligible persons will be able to apply for Indian citizenship under the said law. It should be noted that many poor Indians do not have documents to prove their nationality.

Many of India’s 200 million Muslims fear the law is a precursor to a national register of citizens that could leave them stateless in a country of 1.4 billion.
