Canada announces new sanctions against Russia over Navalny’s death

Canada: Canada has announced further sanctions against Russia following the death in prison of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

According to the Reuters news agency, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said in a statement that the announced sanctions include senior officials and top officials of the Russian judiciary, six Russian officials, including the Justice Service.

It should be noted that Alexei Navalny, a staunch critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, died mysteriously in prison last month.

Alexei Navalny has repeatedly accused and criticized Vladimir Putin of corruption, for which he was arrested on his return from Germany in 2021 and sentenced to 19 years in prison.

Late last year, he was transferred to the Arctic prison colony in the northern Siberian region.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, 47, was serving a 19-year sentence in an Arctic prison colony where he died suddenly and initially the cause could not be determined, but an inquiry committee has been formed to investigate.
