Washington: Security researchers have created a self-replicating AI worm that can infiltrate people’s email to spread malware and steal data.

A computer worm called Morse Two has been created by researchers from the US and Israel to highlight the dangers associated with generative artificial intelligence. Earlier in 1988, the world’s first computer worm was created.

The worm is designed to target artificial intelligence-powered apps, which use tools such as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. The worm has been tested against generative AI-powered email assistants to steal private data and launch spam.

The researchers warned that the worm has emerged as a new type of ‘zero-click malware’, where the victim does not have to click on anything, but rather due to the automated actions of the generative AI tool. Comes into action.

Research shows that attackers can enter prompts while running generative AI models that mimic the prompts entered by the model and confuse them with malicious activity, the researchers said.

The research was presented in a paper titled ‘ComPromptMized: Unleashing zero-click worms that target GenAI-powered applications’.
