Washington: The US has urged Pakistan to continue working with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other international financial institutions to achieve economic stability in the country.

“The United States supports Pakistan’s efforts to break free from the vicious cycle of debt and financial aid,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said at a weekly press briefing.

The statement of the spokesperson of the Department of Foreign Affairs came in response to a question regarding the letter sent by former PTI Chairman Imran Khan to the IMF. The post suggested linking the upcoming loan facility to the audit of the February 8 general elections in the country.

The PTI also demanded an electoral audit of “at least 30 per cent seats in the national and provincial assemblies”, which the party said could be completed in “just two weeks”.

Spokesman Matthew Miller said that Pakistan’s new government should immediately prioritize the economic situation as policies over the next several months will be critical to maintaining economic stability for Pakistanis.

“All I can say to the IMF is that we support Pakistan’s efforts to break free from the vicious cycle of debt and international financing,” he added.

The spokesperson of the Department of Foreign Affairs said that the long-term economic planning of the government of Pakistan is important. Pakistan has been facing fiscal challenges in recent years, with dwindling foreign exchange reserves and the depreciating value of its national currency.
