New Delhi: Social networking website X (formerly Twitter) has admitted that it has blocked certain accounts and posts at the request of the Indian government where farmers are protesting against crop price hikes.

According to a report by the Reuters news agency, X did not give details about the removed posts but clarified that the move was opposed because it restricts freedom of expression.

X said in a statement that the organization remains firm on its position on the Indian government’s legal challenges to block content.

XK Global Government Affairs said in a statement that we will only block these accounts and posts in India, however, we disagree with these steps and maintain that these posts should be linked to freedom of expression.

The statement did not specify which accounts the Indian government has requested to freeze content.

X said legal restrictions oblige him to publish government orders, but the platform wants to maintain transparency.

According to Indian media, the government last week ordered the blocking of content on social media, including the accounts of farmers’ groups and supporters.

India’s Ministry of Home Affairs and Information Technology did not respond to X’s claims.

The demand by the Indian government comes a week after farmers began protesting, stopping 200 kilometers north of the capital New Delhi from marching towards the capital. And tear gas was fired to disperse them.
