World down syndrome day 2023, and purpose of awareness

This March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day, an event promoted by the United Nations Assembly with the purpose of helping to raise awareness about those things that can be done to achieve true inclusion of people who have this genetic alteration.

This year’s theme is “with us, not for us,” with the goal of leaving behind the charitable model of disability, which also treated people with disabilities as objects of charity, as stated by the worldwide organization that organizes the day.

World Down Syndrome and the Human right Approach

In opposition, the UN seeks to promote “a human rights-based approach”, in which “people with disabilities have the right to be treated fairly and to have the same opportunities as all people, working with others to improve their lives”.

What is Down syndrome?

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that occurs when there is extra genetic material on chromosome 21. Therefore, it is medically identified as a chromosomal disease.

It is important to note that the human body’s cells have 46 chromosomes distributed in 23 pairs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), they determine how the baby’s body is formed during pregnancy, as well and how it can function while developing in the womb and after birth. The total of this genetic material on chromosome 21 results in intellectual impairment in children born with Down syndrome.

People with Down syndrome often have other health problems such as hearing loss, eye diseases and heart defects, so they must be followed throughout life. Therefore, to improve the day to day of these people it is essential to carry out medical and parental work at an early age.

Priorities for this interdisciplinary approach should include fulfilling their health needs, doing frequent check-ups to monitor their physical and mental development, and, in some situations, providing timely intervention through physiotherapy, with some inclusive special education as well, and some other community-based support systems.

Fortunately, through social and medical advances, it has been possible to improve the quality of life of these people and, as the UN points out, at the beginning of the twentieth century they were expected to live less than 10 years, but now about 80 percent of adults who have this syndrome are over 50 years old. something in which there is still much to progress.
