According to officials, the storm hit Montebello at 11 a.m. local time, damaging a total of 17 buildings, 11 of which are now uninhabitable.

The National Weather Service assessed the damage and rated the tornado as EF one on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, a tool used to rate the strength and impact of a tornado on a scale of 0-5 zero to five.

He continued by saying that they often land in different areas of California, which is the third largest state in the United States by geographic area.

“Our hearts go out to everyone who was affected by today’s severe weather,” National Weather Service meteorologist Ariel Cohen said.
